A schoolgirl was so upset at the collapse of the West Pier she penned a poem of protest to the city's council leader.
And he was so impressed with her verse, he wrote one back.
Susanna Bellingham of Cross Road, Southwick, told leader Ken Bodfish: "I have made up this poem about you not bothering to help the West Pier."
It read: "I really, really hate you about the West Pier.
"Can't you see I'm very clear?
"The rooms, the pigeons, the poos in the sea.
"You're really, really stupid to me."
She was astonished when Councillor Bodfish replied, also in verse.
He wrote: "Thank you so much for your poetic letter "Suggesting we treat the poor West Pier better.
"Hopefully you will be pleased to hear "That we fully intend rebuilding the pier.
"I'd agree with you, it's a shame we can't pay.
"But our money's spent on things like schools and places to play.
"The pier's a sad sight, all wobbly and cold.
"But you must remember it's ever so old.
"In a couple of years, when it's shiny and new "We'll be able to thank those who cared, like you."
