I completely understand the concerns of residents about the likely rise in council tax.
But the reasons put forward (Letters, January 30) are not the true explanation.
Almost all of Brighton and Hove City Council's increased costs for this year and next are on looking after children and older people, particularly children with special needs.
The council is actually cutting costs in many of its central services, including some of those mentioned by correspondents.
Over the next few weeks, the council will finalise the budget for the year ahead and make public the figures.
-Jackie Lythell, Deputy Leader, Brighton and Hove City Council
