The UK's self-employed, small businesses, higher rate tax payers and other people required to submit self-assessment forms to the Inland Revenue have been filing their returns online.
The January 31 deadline saw 324,710 send in their returns by way of the Inland Revenue web site, which is a 425 per cent increase on the previous year.
The increased levels are something of a recovery for the tax department, given its previous problems.
In May 2002, the site was suspended after a security hole was found, through which customer details could easily be accessed online.
The increase is good news for the Government, which has been spending millions to get people to use ita range of services online.
