Town centre traders have been urged to assess the risk of flooding of their premises.
Sharon Clarke, Worthing's new town centre manager, said: "With the recent heavy rain, West Sussex Fire Brigade was asked for sandbags to protect commercial premises.
"However, it is the owner-occupiers' responsibility to provide sandbags in the event of a possible flood.
"The local authority and fire brigade do not hold stocks of sandbags. They can be purchased from local builders' merchants if you assess your premises are at risk."
On other issues, Ms Clarke said the number of small fires involving rubbish had fallen dramatically during the past two months after town centre officials and firefighters started monitoring the build-up of trade waste.
But she said: "We must not be complacent and must remain vigilant to ensure this reduction continues."
It is also hoped Worthing's Wednesday market will move to Montague Street from April 2 while a French market is planned for March 21-23.
