Do any readers have any records or photos of the evacuation of schoolchildren from Brighton during the war?
I was one of those evacuees. In mid-July 1943, I was evacuated to a village called Denby Dale, near Huddersfield in Yorkshire.
I was ten years old at the time and had been a pupil at St Mark's School, Arundel Road, Brighton.
I have discovered I was enrolled at the village school on July 19, 1943, but I don't know the date I left Brighton. I remember we stayed overnight in a large hall somewhere but I don't know where.
Probably we weren't told for security reasons. I am assuming it took us at least one or two days to arrive at our destinations.
As you can see from my address, I have returned to Yorkshire to live and am planning to celebrate with friends I made in 1943 our friendship of 60 years.
As far as I know, I returned to Brighton in March 1945 and was a pupil at the Intermediate School for Girls at York Place, Brighton, later renamed Margaret Hardy School for Girls.
My name, at that time, was June Miles and I lived at 11 The Leas, 34-35 Sussex Square, Brighton.
