PLANS to bring a run-down hotel back into operation have been given the go-ahead.
The George Hotel, in George Street, Hailsham, was closed last year after gradually falling into decline and gaining a reputation as a trouble spot.
Owners of the grade II-listed building, Pennant Inns, applied to build a three-storey block of flats in the pub grounds and convert outbuildings into offices and shops.
Members of Wealden District Council's development control sub-committee have approved to the scheme.
A council spokeswoman said: "The plan was approved but there were a number of conditions attached to it."
The proposals had attracted some criticism from town councillors and conservation groups concerned about the height and presence of the flats in a conservation area and the possible affect on neighbouring houses.
Councillors said the plan could go ahead but developers would have to come up with a full plan for a water drainage system and submit samples of building materials to the council before work starts.
The hotel will be brought back to use and non-residents will be able to use the bar.
The owners are in talks with Dark Star Breweries based in Haywards Heath, which hopes to create a family-friendly pub.
