Strike action by baggage handlers at Gatwick has been averted.
Ground crews working for Aviance - one of the big four handling firms at the airport - were threatening to walk out after complaints of "bully boy" tactics by management.
But before a deadline expired, Aviance contacted the GMB union by letter to ask for negotiations to begin.
The threats of changes in working practices, cuts to staff allowances and alterations in terms and conditions have now been withdrawn.
Gary Smith, regional GMB union representative said: "It is very encouraging and a victory for common sense."
Last week Mr Smith accused Aviance of "bully boy" tactics and threatened strike unless the union heard from management by Thursday.
"The outcome is very positive and we will now negotiate jointly at a national level," he added.
GMB's 700 Aviance members were ready to hold a secret ballot to vote on strike action.
The move would have been crippling for Aviance who have put cost-cutting recovery measures in place after losing contracts.
Mr Smith added: "We appreciate that Aviance does have problems and I think they simply approached members on the wrong tack."
