An erratic driver was caught with more than 200 bags of suspected drugs when police stopped him in Worthing.

Officers conducting a high-visibility operation flagged the male driver down in Seamill Park Avenue.

Inside the vehicle, officers found small bags which were believed to contain cannabis resin.

A police spokesman said the driver, who was in his late 20s and from Worthing, was arrested at the scene on Thursday. He was subsequently released on bail while the substances were analysed.

Inspector Allan Lowe said the arrest was a direct result of Operation Lancer, which involved large numbers of police on foot patrol in certain areas of Worthing.

He said: "Operation Lancer is an initiative, local to Worthing, which looks to improve public confidence in policing through high-profile foot patrols.

"Some areas patrolled may be crime hot spots, others may be areas where we feel this type of patrol may be beneficial."

"Once on patrol, the officers will speak with members of the community about any local concerns they have and aim to reduce any barriers between the police and the local community.

"Moreover, the officers on patrol are constantly looking for any opportunities to reduce crime.

"Thursday's operation was in East Worthing and was clear evidence that this type of operation can be a success."
