Supporters of Brighton and Hove Albion have a reputation for good behaviour and there was little trouble when they were in the lower divisions.
But now Albion are in Division One there is always the danger tempers will flare, especially when playing teams with a reputation for rough supporters.
Police and the club are keen to keep the temperature low, especially at Withdean, which is in a largely residential area.
Their methods have been so successful they are being copied by other clubs.
Police know who the troublemakers are and work closely with the Albion to make sure they can keep them under control.
The small number who cause problems can easily be ejected and banned from attending future matches.
It is impossible to stop all trouble, as the trashing of a pub after the Portsmouth game proved. But the close liaison is providing generally good results so far.
