Having read with interest the comments the new chief constable has made about the racist and uncaring attitude towards asylum-seekers, I would question why he thinks he could police an area such as Saltdean, a proposed venue for asylum-seekers at the Grand Ocean Hotel, when last weekend three bus shelters were vandalised, a car was smashed to smithereens, a telephone box had to be removed due to vandalism and a local GP's surgery had its window smashed.
Vandals attacked St Nicholas compound over Christmas, taking cards and damaging toilets.
The chief constable should be more concerned at restoring police presence in the area. We have no local bobby and our police station at Rottingdean is an antique shop.
I challenge you, Ken Jones, to come to Saltdean and explain how your non-existent force in the area is going to protect us.
-Jane Gardner, Saltdean
