Lewes failed to secure the win they wanted to round off a weekend of centenary celebrations.
A 2-2 draw with Oxford Hawks has left Lewes third from bottom in National League division two and desperately battling against relegation.
Oxford led after just three minutes through Ali McShane but Lewes levelled instantly when skipper Will Champness launched an aerial ball which Andy Pike lobbed goalwards and Marnix Achterbergh helped it into the net.
The visitors restored their lead eight minutes later and it remained that way until half time despite Pike hitting the crossbar.
The introduction of Carl Wright, returning after a lengthy absence with a hamstring problem, added extra impetus in the second half and Lewes secured a point when Adrian Bettesworth scored from a short corner.
Manager Paul Benoy said: "We deserved to win it with the number of chances we had but they could have nicked it at the end."
On Friday night 280 attended a gala ball to celebrate 100 years of hockey in Lewes. Mike Corby, president of English Hockey, was the special guest.
Meanwhile, East Grinstead's promotion hopes were hit by a 2-0 defeat away to leaders Bowdon, leaving them fifth in the table and three points behind third-placed Havant.
Despite the setback, coach Ian Pattison took heart from the performance.
He said: "It was a hard fought game.
"I was reasonably happy with the performance. It showed some areas we can work on."
In South Premier division one, Chichester lost 3-2 away to Beckenham despite goals from Brian Lock and Clive Dunn from a short corner.
