East Grinstead's ten-year absence from the top flight of County League football could be coming to an end.
A 4-2 win away to promotion rivals Lancing gave Grinstead's hopes of going up a huge boost.
Leaders Eastbourne Town and third-placed Rye and Iden United, who have several games in hand, remain odds-on for promotion but Wasps now look well placed to join them in division one next year.
Saturday's victory left Grinstead seven points clear of fourth-placed Saltdean United who play Rye tonight.
With 11 games still to play, manager Bob Smith is not getting carried away.
He said: "There are still some hard games to come and we have to match the level of performance we've produced in the last couple of games every week."
Grinstead trailed at half time after Glenn Souter's corner was headed home by Derren Woods with the aid of a big deflection off Grant Hearn.
Dave Gellatly levelled after the break then substitutes Jamie Liddell (two) and Kris Trevor put Wasps in control.
Liddell's first was a penalty after Lancing keeper Simon Davey had brought down Trevor and was shown the red card. The home side reduced the deficit with a goal from their own substitute Dean Leaver deep into stoppage time.
Smith said: "We were unfortunate to be behind at half-time but I felt that if we kept stretching them and kept possession then the goals would come."
