I was saddened but not surprised the developer Wildmoor finally has its way regarding the "redevelopment" of The Quadrant Freehouse, Brighton, despite having had similar previous applications rejected and the pub having gained listed building status in 2000.
The last Tory government ensured our planning laws favour developers by allowing them to appeal against planning decisions, while cash-strapped local authorities cannot afford to constantly reject planning applications, even if they are broadly the same.
New Labour could demonstrate it represents more than the interests of big business by allowing individuals and organisations the right to appeal against planning decisions.
It could also change the rules so developers always fund the costs of appeals - after all, they are the only parties that stand to make a profit.
Sadly, proposed reforms of the planning system show the Government is interested in making life easier only for developers.
