A fire at Brighton railway station caused a morning of train delays and cancellations.

The blaze broke out in the Lover's Walk goods depot at the station at about 2am this morning.

Despite attempts by firefighters to contain the flames, it was still burning four hours later.

The fire caused a power cut, which meant some rolling stock could not be moved out of the depot.

Two trains, the 6.26am from Eastbourne to London Bridge and the 6.34am from Littlehampton to Victoria, had to be cancelled. Five London-bound trains left Brighton with fewer carriages than usual.

The fire started in a power supply line underneath a walkway beside the depot.

Station staff managed to get power into the depot through a supply point at Preston Park.

Leading firefighter Mark Petty said: "It was difficult to locate where exactly the fire reached.

"There was a JCB trying to dig through to reach the cables. The fire was still smoking away at 5.45am."

He said crews left station staff with cooling agents and instructions on containing the fire if it started up again.

A spokeswoman for train operators South Central said: "We expect things to be okay in time for the evening rush-hour."

Network Rail, which owns and maintains railway infrastructure, sent engineers to resolve the problem this morning.

A spokeswoman said: "We are investigating what went wrong with the cable that started the fire.

"It caused some delays but services have been returning to normal."
