It is disturbing the amount of anti-Americanism I read in The Argus letters pages.
I lived in London during the early part of the Second World War.
Although the bravery of young British and Allied pilots won the Battle of Britain in 1940, I remember the terrible time this country went through, losing battles on land and sea and our cities being wiped out by the blitzkrieg.
Sir Winston Churchill and I were truly thankful the US entered the war in 1941 and circumstances started to improve for this country.
The US gained nothing by fighting the war in Europe but I am thankful we in this country retained our freedom. We should all be grateful to the US for that.
The UK would be far better off as the 51st state of the US than in a charade of an alliance with Germany and France, the two European countries we can never trust.
