A council housing estate may be built next to a police cell block.
Developers want to build 30 houses on land south of Hildon Close, just west of the Worthing police's new custody centre at Centenary House.
The scheme near Littlehampton Road would include 24 houses, four flats and two bungalows with wheelchair access, served by a new access road.
But ten people have objected claiming the estate would affect property prices and cause parking problems for residents already living in the area.
Some argued that it would be a shame to see the open space developed when it had become a home to foxes, squirrels and bats.
Worthing Homes Ltd said all the homes would be for rent at affordable prices.
