More than 150 tax-evading motorists have been caught in a three-day crackdown on illegal vehicles in East Sussex.

Police, council bosses and DVLA and Customs and Excise officials worked in teams this week to quiz more than 250 drivers.

They swamped hotspots in Hailsham, Horam and Heathfield as part of Operation Balmoral, designed to cut illegal vehicles on roads.

Out of 37 vehicles examined by vehicle inspectors, 15 were ordered to have new MoTs. One was towed away because of its dangerous state.

Customs and Excise officers also seized two vehicles from Little London Road in Heathfield, after they tested positive to having red diesel which should only be used in farm machinery.

Both were returned to the owners after they paid £500 on-the-spot fines. A further 125 diesel tanks were dipped.
