Conservative Sarah Hall has comfortably defended a Churchill ward seat in an Adur council by-election.
The overall Tory vote share was down on last May, when Liberal Democrats failed to fight, but in 2000 it was a three-party marginal with less than 9 per cent separating the top and bottom runners.
RESULTS: Con 368, Lib Dem 213, Lab 148. (May 2002 - Con 680, Lab 394, Socialist Alliance 132). Conservative hold, swing 3.2 per cent Labour to Conservative.
