With the initial consultation period now closed, it seems Southern Water is likely to focus on either Ovingdean or Lower Sheepcote Valley for its sewage treatment works.
Despite vociferous opposition from locals in Ovingdean, that site would seem preferable, given the works will be well hidden and relatively distant from housing and the rest of the site would be returned to downland rather than used for commercial agricultural purposes.
Unlike Ovingdean, Lower Sheepcote Valley is used by many hundreds of people for dog walking, sports and recreation and includes some very sensitive downland on the far bank.
It is close to homes on Wilson Avenue and in Roedean, not to mention a large local school.
I hope Southern Water thinks carefully about this choice and does not just take what seems to be the option that will lead to the least protest.
