Police have questioned two teenagers following an arson attack on a beach chalet at the start of the half-term holiday.
Firefighters were called to the smokelogged chalet near Worthing's Aquarena swimming pool at 9.30am yesterday. They extinguished some burning bedding which had been deliberately set alight.
Beach inspector Ian Miller said a pane of glass had been removed to gain entry. Police later arrested two youths.
It was the latest in a series of vandal attacks on the seafront in recent days which have caused thousands of pounds' worth of damage.
In a separate incident vandals broke into the Lido, stole a tin of green paint and threw it over the outside wall of the entertainment complex.
And windows at the beach office, between the Lido and the Denton Lounge, were smashed in a night of destruction.
Skateboarders have been blamed for further damage along the promenade at West Worthing, where ornamental concrete bollards have been kicked over and smashed.
Police are studying cctv footage of the chalet blaze, the latest in a series of attacks between Splash Point and the Aquarena.
Last year several chalets were destroyed in an arson attack and Ju-Ju's cafe had to close because of severe smoke damage.
Worthing Borough Council has not yet started repairing the tarpaulin-covered chalets at Denton Gardens, even though councillors recently called the job "urgent".
In January, vandals broke into another chalet nearby and daubed offensive and racist graffiti on the walls, sparking a call from the tenant for increased security patrols at night.
The council spends more than £140,000 a year repairing vandalism around the town and has recently set up an anti-graffiti patrol.
Police have also been urged to step up patrols as part of a shake-up of policing in the town.
