Seafaring fans from Lancing and Sompting could be picked for a Captain Cook-style voyage.
Two people, aged between 18 and 25, are set to win a place in the crew of the HM Bark Endeavour, a replica of the famous explorer's 18th Century sailing ship.
A man and a woman will be sponsored by Adur District Council to help sail the ship from Falmouth to Shoreham.
The Endeavour, which featured on the BBC TV series The Ship, left Australia last February and has been sailing in UK waters ever since.
The voyage from Falmouth will start on March 31 and end at Shoreham on April 4.
To win a place on the ship, entrants should write 250 words on why they want to join the crew and how they would pass on their experiences to other young people.
Competition winners, who must live in the district, will not need sailing experience but a head for heights and physical fitness would help.
Adur council chairman Liza McKinney said: "We are so pleased to be able to offer two young people this wonderful opportunity and experience.
"Endeavour is a majestic ship and I can't wait to see her sail into Shoreham."
Send applications to The Chairman, Adur District Council, Civic Centre, Ham Road, Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex, BN43 6PR. All applications must be received before March 10.
The ship will be on show to the public from April 5 to 13, with tours costing £7 for adults and £4 for children under 16.
