A man was fighting for his life last night after being struck by a car which sped away from a police check and mounted a pavement.
The 39-year-old man, from Brighton, suffered multiple injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.
The incident occurred in Lynchet Close, Holling-dean, Brighton, at 12.20am yesterday.
At the time, plain clothes police had been attempting to stop the Vauxhall car to speak to the men inside.
The car sped off, narrowly missing one officer but hit a pedestrian.
It was abandoned a short way along Lynchet Close.
Three men have been arrested and were last night being questioned at Brighton and Worthing.
Inspector Natalie Carron, who is leading a team of 20 detectives, said: "We are appealing to anyone who may have seen or heard anything in Lynchet Close during the early hours of the morning in question."
