As a regular commuter along the A27 between Brighton and Eastbourne, I am appalled and ashamed at the amount of litter I see on the verges and in the hedgerows.

What visitors to our lovely county make of this I shudder to think. With the current hit film The Hours on general release, I envisage people flocking to Virginia Woolf's house at Rodmell and to Charleston Farmhouse this summer.

What will they make of the piles of rubbish at the entrance to Charleston I see untouched every day? Surely we should be proud of our heritage and want to display it in its best light?

I have rarely seen a council employee clearing any part of this road - some sheets of plastic have been waving at me from the hedgerows all winter.

I have a good mind to purchase a roll of black bags and use my little spare time to clear up this mess myself.

In the US, roadsides are sponsored by businesses in order to keep them clean. I suspect the majority of rubbish is thrown from cars and other vehicles. Those who do this should hang there heads in shame.

Come on, everyone, we need to keep our county clean and be proud of our heritage before we get the name of England's dirtiest county.
