Firefighters have worn blue uniforms for over 50 years. From today they're going for gold because it reflects heat better.
As we reported last May, all full-time and retained firefighters in East and West Sussex are being issued with gold-coloured outfits.
The change follows research showing gold reflects radiant heat better than blue.
It is also said to absorb and retain less heat and will make Sussex's 1,450 firefighters more visible.
The other noticeable change is with firefighters' helmets.
Motorbike-style headwear with side-impact protection, safety glasses and a heat protection visor will be introduced.
Firefighters say they are happy for their old uniforms to make way for what they consider to be best kit available.
Steve Huggins, chairman of the East Sussex Fire Brigades Union, said: "There may be a slight reluctance on the aesthetic side to seeing the old uniform go but overall we're really pleased we are getting it.
"It has been something we have been asking for for a long time.
"The chief fire officer and the fire authority have been supportive in getting us the new kit, which really is the best on the market."
Each item of uniform has a bar code to enable suppliers Ballyclare to clean, check and keep track of them so they retain their quality.
