Bognor returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Chertsey in division one south.
The Rocks are now one point behind second placed Horsham with two games in hand.
But for the heroics of home keeper Paul Seuke it could have been by a much larger margin.
The hosts made things hard for themselves, finishing the game with nine men after two red cards.
Scott Tipper had already gone close before Bognor took the lead on 35 minutes when Richard Davies stole in behind the defence. His lay-off was sent into the box by Steve Sargent and David Birmingham headed home.
Four minutes later it was 2-0 when a Tipper effort was rebounded out to Davies who rifled the return into the back of the net for a debut goal.
Bognor dominated the second period but could find no way past Seuke.
Billy Jones was sent off for a second bookable offence and Tony Bonaventura saw red following an off-the-ball incident.
