About three years ago, I was one of many local residents complaining to Brighton and Hove City Council about the systematic lengthening of double yellow lines at most road corners and junctions.
In a lengthy telephone call with a council spokesman, I was informed "new safety recommendations" called for parked vehicles to be kept more distant from points where a driver's view of the road was occluded.
Although I felt the extended restrictions to parking were excessive, public safety was certainly not an issue I wished to argue about.
Following the recent so-called "consultations" and debates, a parking scheme is about to be introduced to Goldsmid ward.
Watching the road markings taking place, I have been amazed to see, at every street corner and junction, those recently extended double yellow lines are being painted out with heavy tar paint.
Typically, on the T-junction closest to my own house, parking for an additional six cars thus becomes available.
Apparently, our public-spirited and caring council seems to have become rather less committed to public safety now the pay-and-display cash machines are taking over the pavements.
