The Asda superstore chain says trade will be threatened if a new park-and-ride scheme goes ahead.

But Brighton and Hove city councillors have agreed the scheme in Carden Avenue, Hollingbury.

About 200 cars will be parked in part of the road during Albion home matches.

It is a condition of the clubs being given permission for another 2,000 seats at its temporary ground in Withdean.

Carden Avenue will have to be closed between the roundabout south of the A27 and the western end of Crowhurst Road.

Displaced traffic will have to go along Crowhurst Road or Ditchling Road.

Colin Strong, manager of the Asda store in Crowhurst Road, said: "We are very disappointed this scheme is set to go ahead as it will have a significant impact on the workers and the customers at the store.

"It will also have a detrimental effect on the people who live and work in the immediate area."

Asda wrote to Tory councillor Brian Pidgeon, who said: "This is the most ill-thought-out plan to have come before this committee."

He said the effects would be felt for most of the day during home matches and people would be trapped in their homes through traffic gridlock.

Labour councillor Jeane Lepper praised the club for its efforts to make Withdean work. But she had some concerns about the use of Carden Avenue and the traffic that would be displaced.

Transport councillor Simon Battle said the spaces were needed to provide the seats Albion badly needed.

Labour councillor Bob Carden said: "For the good the club brings to the community, it is worth just a little bit of inconvenience for a short time."

Coun Battle said he did not think there would be much disruption and added that objectors would have a chance to make comments when a traffic order was advertised.
