Horsham bounced back from last week's disappointing home defeat to Leatherhead with a 2-1 victory at Corinthian Casuals in Division One South.
The match only got the go-ahead ten minutes before kick off thanks to the frantic efforts of the groundstaff after the referee had originally deemed the hard, rutted pitch to be dangerous.
Assistant manager Ali Rennie said: "That was the best we've played for a while despite a very poor surface which wasn't conducive to good football.
"To be fair, their groundstaff worked hard soaking the pitch and breaking up the ruts with sledgehammers and rakes, but it was still a poor surface."
Hornets played the better football and took the lead in the 19th minute when Lee Carney supplied a perfect through ball for Jamie Taylor to run on to and fire past John Hotchkiss.
The home side replied seven minutes later in spectacular style when Simon Sobihy blasted home from 35 yards.
Hornets regained the initiative on the stroke of half time.
Carney flicked the ball on, the home defence failed to deal with it and Gavin Geddes cleverly held a defender off before unselfishly squaring to Taylor to convert from six yards.
Geddes twice went close to extending their lead in the second half when Hornets were rarely troubled.
