A mix of old and new for our picks this week, with Art Garfunkel, Hazel O'Connor, Mama Joseph and a showcase of new local talent.
ART GARFUNKEL, Congress Theatre, Eastbourne, March 21 Who can put a hand on heart and say they have never enjoyed happy moments humming along to one of the many songs created by this fuzzy-haired legend and his diminutive pal? Although Paul Simon has had more success since the duo split in 1972, Garfunkel has established himself as an entity in his own right, with acting roles and solo albums. Starts 7.30pm, tickets cost £18-£26.50. Call 01323 412000.
MAMA JOSEPH, Concorde 2, Brighton, March 22 Billed as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Reef meet the Foo Fighters, this Brighton band are energetic and powerful. Formed in 1997 and originally named Stonewall Jackson, the group won South-East Battle of the Bands in 2000, were released on Brighton music compilation Hangin' in the Sun and supported Reef in 2002. Their new album, Bleed, is out now. 6.30pm, tickets cost £5. Call 01273 772770.
SOUNDS OF THE CITY, Pavilion Theatre, Brighton, March 26 For the third year running the Centre of Contemporary Music is putting on this series of concerts, which features some of the talented bands in Brighton and Hove. The event is staged over three nights, split over consecutive Wednesdays. Starts 7.30pm, tickets cost £3.50. Call 01273 709709.
HAZEL O'CONNOR, Komedia, Brighton, March 27 An intimate evening of love songs from this Eighties icon may be a bit of a contrast to the punky image she portrayed in Breaking Glass. Working with Cormac De Barra on the Irish harp, the star moves from classic O'Connor songs to Irish and jazz as well as some new unrecorded material. Starts 8.30pm, tickets cost £10/£8. 01273 647100.
