Steve Bullimore is looking to continue his winning start to the season with a little help from wife Helen.

The Haywards Heath bike rider recorded two wins and a second place in the Supertwins class of the BEMSEE club nationwide series at Brands Hatch.

It was a fantastic start by someone in only his second season of racing and now Bullimore wants more of the same.

His first taste of racing came two years ago after a couple of track days had whetted his appetite. In BEMSEE's Rookie 600 series he finished fourth overall.

Last year Bullimore, 35, got himself a 1000cc Aprilia to race in the Supertwins and the MRO Championship but he lasted just one month before he ran out of money.

However, he is now back and hoping to complete the whole season.

He said: "I tried a couple of MRO rounds last year in the Aprilia Challenge. I qualified second twice and got a podium at Brands Hatch but then the money ran out.

"I am hoping to be able to do the whole year this year.

"Until the first meeting you don't know who you are up against. But judging by Brands Hatch I might be in with a shout."

Bullimore, a software engineer, does not have any sponsorship or trackside support, which is a familiar problem for many people in this sport.

He promotes himself through his website www.steveb-racing.co.uk and now Helen, who Steve married last September, is playing her part.

He said: "I haven't been able to con any of my mates into coming along so Helen said she would help. She looks after the bike doing things like the tyre warmers, petrol and changing wheels. It is a bit of a team effort."

Bullimore is just one of a number of riders flying the flag for Haywards Heath this season.

Alex Symon is hoping to challenge for honours in the MRO Powerbike championship after winning the BEMSEE Powerbike and Clubman 1300 series last year.

Meanwhile, Richard Davies is embarking on his first full season in the BEMSEE King of Clubs championship in the Supersport400 class, as well as the Clubman 400 races.

Davies, 29, got hooked on racing through track days and did five rounds of the Rookie 400 series last year.

He said: "I have had a full bike licence since 1993 but only started doing trackdays in 2000. I attended two Ducati Race Academy days at Cadwell Park, then purchased my Honda VFR400 NC30 for use as a track bike.

"After a hectic year of trackdays, about 16 in all, I started to want more and began thinking about this racing lark.

"The NC was converted to full track spec and my first race was at Brands on the June 8 last year. I was hooked. Five meetings later the last race of the season was also at Brands and here I managed personal bests of 12th and 14th position, scoring six points in the process."

With help from Tony and Jeanette Masters at The Motorcycle Workshop, Bolney, plus his tyre sponsor Mark Grady at M&H Transport, Smallfield, he began the season at Brands Hatch two weeks ago.

Davies, a manager at Dixons tax free shop at Gatwick, did not get a favourable grid draw but did enough to suggest he could have a good season.

He said: "Initially I want to improve my own personal bests at different circuit throughout the season.

"Originally I would have been happy with a top 15 championship finish. After Brands, maybe I could look to the top ten."

Davies will be in action at Brands Hatch this weekend as the BEMSEE King of Clubs championship gets under way.

The meeting also features the MRO Championship, which is the next step up from club racing, and a number of Sussex riders will be in action.

Among them are Symon, Brighton's Kenny Everest, Luke Palmer from Plumpton Green, Crawley's Ollie Merrilees and Andrew Ballard of Hove.
