Albion staged a superb second half fightback to prove they can pick up results without Bobby Zamora.
His replacement Anthony Rougier was the hero as the Seagulls kept their survival bid on course with a battling first away point for four matches.
Rougier equalised with a header against the bar which rebounded in off the back of Ipswich keeper Andy Marshall.
He then marked his last appearance of his month on loan from Reading by putting Steve Coppell's men ahead with nine minutes left.
The Seagulls' first point in ten League matches this season in the absence of the injured Zamora would have been three but for an 85th minute leveller by Martijn Reuser.
It was quite a turn around after Albion had been comprehensively outplayed in the first half by play-off chasing Ipswich.
Marcus Bent put Town in front on 20 minutes with his eighth of the season after a rare mistake by captain Danny Cullip.
Dean Blackwell could have equalised against the run of play when he headed over from a Richard Carpenter corner and Albion were much more purposeful after the break.
They were back on terms on 66 minutes when Rougier's header from Paul Brooker's left wing cross thumped against the bar and went in off the back of the unlucky Marshall.
Ipswich were awarded a penalty two minutes later when Carpenter tripped Chris Makin, but substitute Darren Bent blazed the spot kick over.
The Seagulls made the most of that reprieve as Rougier slotted in his second goal for the club from close range from Brooker's cross on 81 minutes.
It looked like being the winner until Reuser drove in from 25 yards to stretch Ipswich's unbeaten run to eight games.
Results elsewhere were unkind to Albion.
They have dropped a place to next to bottom after Stoke won 2-1 at Watford.
Grimsby also picked up a useful away point with a 1-1 draw at Burnley, but rock bottom Sheffield Wednesday are beginning to look doomed after losing 3-0 at Millwall.
