Like many colleagues who fought against Rommel's forces in the western desert during the Second World War, I find it incredible when I hear of complaints from the Forces in Iraq about the wrong boots for combat, insufficient rations and sandstorms.
War, in those days, was fought in Army-issue boots with socks, gaiters and shorts.
Our Army rations consisted of the famous M&V (meat and veg), hard biscuits and an occasional brew-up of tea.
Water was so scarce, it was hardly used for washing but mainly to drink and to keep radiators topped up.
As for sandstorms, you had to accept them - often for days on end.
It must be remembered we were not professional soldiers but, with basic training, we simply got on with whatever task was given.
So, to the troops now in action, please stop commenting about the hard life you are leading - and good luck to you, whatever the outcome.
