I was disappointed that some taking part in demonstrations in Brighton last Thursday evening caused criminal damage to the Town Hall.

Like many friends, colleagues and strangers, I feel strongly that direct action has a role to play in bringing peace to the world and getting our boys and girls in the Gulf back home safely as soon as possible.

Rioting can only damage our cause. Neither those who choose war nor the faction that chose violence at what was, for the most part, a peaceful demonstration, do so in my name.

As the adage goes: There is no way to peace, peace is the way.
