It was a good idea to merge Knoll Infant School and Goldstone Primary School in Hove to create a larger, stronger organisation.
But councillors and officials made a mistake in overestimating how much money could be raised from selling the Knoll site so that an extension could be put on the Goldstone building.
Instead, Goldstone Primary School has endured the worst of both worlds in being a combined school on two sites.
Now at last the city council has found new ways of raising cash from the sale which should enable the combined school to be built next year.
It's just a pity the school has had to go through all the trauma and lose a much-respected head in the process.
Let's hope there are no more pitfalls in a process which should provide a new school and some much-needed housing too.
