Burgess Hill beat East Preston 2-0 and now need three more wins from their remaining eight games to secure the County League division one title.

Tim Marshall headed the first from a Sean Edwards corner and Steve Harper produced a great finish to wrap up victory in the second half.

Manager Danny Bloor said: "We need to win three games and it will be nice to win those three as soon as possible.

"We have Arundel on Tuesday and Three Bridges next Saturday and then Whitehawk the following Tuesday. What a great way it would be to win the league by beating Whitehawk at Leylands Park."

Meanwhile, Whitehawk lost 1-0 at home to Hassocks, Chris Hewitt getting the only goal with with a thunderous free kick after home keeper Wayne Collins had been penalised for handling outside his area.

Graham Beveridge wasted two other chances in a good first half for Hassocks and the visitors were rarely troubled despite a fightback from the hosts in the second period.

Sidlesham boss Richard Towers admitted he was infuriated to see his side's game at Southwick called off at half-time.

The visitors were 3-0 up when referee Paul Preston suffered a calf strain. One of his assistants agreed to replace him but no one could be found to run the line.

Towers said: "Anything other than the three points being awarded to us will be an injustice.

"We offered two of our own people to run the line, including a qualified referee, but Sammy Donnelly would not accept either of them."

Wickers boss Donnelly said: "Any manager would have done the same."

The abandonment led to Towers' 16-year-old son Danny seeing his superb debut goal wiped out. Scott Tipper and Glen Bridgeman also netted.

Chichester came from a goal down to beat Pagham 3-1. Tony Stephens, Stefan Wojciechowski and Roger Moore scored as Chi improved in the second half.
