As Adam Trimingham reported (The Argus, April 4), the British National Party has put up a candidate in East Brighton in the local election.
I hope readers share my feelings of sadness and revulsion at the fact the BNP thinks it has a chance of gaining support in Brighton and Hove, a city with a reputation for tolerance and diversity.
It seems clear the BNP is trying to build on the hysteria about asylum-seekers which has been stirred up in Saltdean in recent months.
If it does well this time, it may try to build up a stronger base here. The time to prevent this is now.
I appeal to everyone who is against racism and bigotry to unite against the horrible poison of the BNP.
-Professor Raphael Salkie, Saltdean
