Swans nesting in a Worthing stream have become sitting targets for heartless vandals.
Youths have been firing missiles from catapults and throwing rocks at the birds on land, which is part of the Willowbrook Trading Estate.
Three eggs have already been smashed by these yobs and the birds themselves are in peril through their attacks.
The behaviour of these youngsters is inexcusable. They are trying to harm beautiful birds, which are a protected species.
But part of the problem is the disgraceful state of the land, which is littered with rubbish of all kinds.
While the swans are there, police need to pay regular visits to the site to deter attacks and the owners should clear it up promptly so ready-made missiles are not available.
