As a resident of Saltdean, I am deeply ashamed of the reactions of my neighbours to the news that refugees will not be coming to stay at the Grand Ocean Hotel.
How can it be good news we are going to miss the opportunity to help people in need?
We were being offered a chance to show the best side of being British - welcoming, open-hearted and kind.
Instead, we are shown up as being selfish. Saltdean residents care more about the value of their houses than the needs of their fellow human beings.
The fact that the British National Party is putting up a candidate in Saltdean shows what sort of people it thinks live here: The sort who might be tempted to vote for a party that believes Hitler was right, black people are less human than white and Jews should be exterminated.
If today's Nazis think the people in this area are going to support them, what does it say about us all? This is a victory for selfishness and racism.
