Eastbourne Borough got their eastern division promotion campaign back on track with a decisive 4-0 win over lowly Spalding at Priory Lane on Saturday.
After their midweek hiccup against Corby, Scott Ramsay calmed early nerves with a classic seventh minute goal, his 35th of the season.
But the lowly visitors made the leaders fight hard before they finally capitulated in the second half.
However, victory by four clear goals brought relief for Eastbourne fans and management.
Assistant boss Nick Greenwood said: "We needed to win convincingly because goal difference can become very significant at this stage of the season.
"It's not just about winning, we want to score as many goals as possible and we could have had five or six."
A delicate flick by Ramsay from John Westcott's cross broke the deadlock.
But there was still an edginess about Borough's play despite periods of pressure and they failed to increase their lead before half-time.
It was left to John Price to ease the tension with a header from Daren Pearce's free-kick in the 56th minute for the defender's ninth of the season.
Ten minutes later, Matt Crabb cut the ball back from the left and Marc Huggins, with Ramsay lurking behind him him, could only push the ball into his own net.
Substitute Dave Adams completed the scoring four minutes from time after substitute keeper Tom Roberts, who is only 15, had blocked his first attempt.
Borough maintained their three-point lead at the top of the eastern division but with their promotion rivals also winning, manager Garry Wilson is taking nothing for granted.
He said: "We have got a hard game at Bashley on Saturday and then Erith at home on Easter Monday.
"We are looking at about seven points from our four remaining games to go up and if we can get four from these two I'll be happy."
St Leonards conceded four times in the final 13 minutes and crashed to a 6-0 defeat against Stamford as their goals against tally hit 18 in eight days.
Saints had not lost in three visits to the Newflame Stadium but heavy defeats against Histon (8-1) and King's Lynn (4-0) meant that record was hardly likely to be stretched and so it proved as Stamford's Kevin Slinn volleyed in a Danny Steadman centre after only three minutes.
Steadman (54) swept home the second before Davie Minnus (77) put through his own net. Steadman (79), sub Gareth Pritchard (83, pen) and Slinn (88) completed the scoring.
