Armed raiders fled empty-handed after trying to hold up staff at a Sussex petrol station.
Cashiers at the Texaco garage in Kingsway, Hove, became suspicious and locked the door after the two men arrived in their red Ford Orion just after 1am on Thursday.
One offender hurled a paving slab through the front door but the two gave up and drove off.
CCTV footage showed one was carrying a knife.
The night before, two robbers hurled a paving slab through the front door of Sussex Square Garage in Eastern Road, Brighton, and escaped with the contents of the till.
Police believe the same two men were responsible.
In Thursday's raid, one offender wore a red top and the other a cream top.
