Lewes's promotion hopes suffered a setback after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Croydon Athletic.
To make matters worse, Ross Venables was sent off in injury time for foul and abusive language towards the referee.
The Rooks took the lead in the 19th minute when Tony Reid scored with a powerful downward header at the far post from a left wing cross by Danny Davis.
On 35 minutes, Reid was unlucky not to add to his tally after he crashed a fierce 20-yard strike against the crossbar.
But two goals in 90 seconds saw Athletic take a 2-1 half time lead. A missed tackle let in Dean Lock to shoot wide of Russell Tanner and then, with Marc Cable receiving treatment off the field for a head injury, Byron Glasgow found a gap in the defence to beat Tanner with a low effort which seemed to go under the body of the goalkeeper.
On 65 minutes, home forward John Fowler struck the crossbar but Lewes deservedly equalised seven minutes later when Lee Newman slid home at full stretch a low cross from the left by Jon Palmer.
Goalkeeper Luke Burton made an unhappy return to the Worthing side as Rebels suffered only their second defeat in 11 games at Egham Town.
Boss Barry Lloyd opted to recall the fit again Burton in place of Matthew May, but Jack McKinlay struck to give Egham the lead on 19 minutes by heading in at the far post after Burton failed to cut out a corner from Paul Reed. Reed doubled the advantage three minutes after the break, scoring direct from a corner and another Burton blunder allowed Alan Jordan to seal victory 17 minutes from time after the goalkeeper dropped a free-kick.
Worthing, unbeaten in their previous five away games, were denied a late consolation when Jordan headed an effort from Peter Brackley off the line.
Horsham boosted their chances of a top six finish with a 1-0 home win over Windsor & Eton.
The only goal came after 38 minutes when Lee Butcher swept home Gary Charman's pass.
Gavin Geddes, Lee Carney and Steffan Ball all missed chances to give Horsham a more comfortable victory.
