There is something desperate about the way in which we are bombarded with the word "city".
Everything seems to include it - City Clean, City Direct, City News and so on.
Now we find history being rewritten.
An article about Parnell and Kitty O'Shea (The Argus, April 18) is headed "Love affair in city is revisited".
Whatever else was on their minds at the time, it was not a city, for they knew the area as two towns, Hove and Brighton - and, by living in Walsingham Road, evidently preferred Hove.
Chichester, for example, finds no need to keep proclaiming itself a city and appears all the more dignified for it.
