In his letter to The Argus (April 16), Harry Treadwell - a Tory spokesman - accused Adur Labour councillors of being "dissembling" and "cruel and mendacious" when raising the subject of higher council tax bills.
He stated West Sussex County Council needed £7.2 million more to cater for extra pupil numbers in justifying the high council tax increase.
Why, then, as a result of lower than expected pupil numbers, has some £2.86 million from the 2003/04 West Sussex budget had to be subsequently redirected to schools?
It is because the council got its sums wrong and had asked the Government for too much.
It is not surprising that, following subsequent representations to the minister from education authorities, Brighton and Hove City Council - along with others - got extra schools cash and West Sussex got nothing.
Who, then, is guilty of "dissembling" the truth?
-Brian Whipp deputy leader, Labour group, West Sussex County Council
