Armed raiders last night held up staff at a village supermarket, escaping with about £200.

Two men entered the Co-op in High Street, Rottingdean, at 9.15pm, pretending to be customers.

One produced a knife and threatened the 22-year-old male supervisor and 17-year-old male shop assistant.

They grabbed most of the evening's takings from the till and ran off to a brown saloon car, parked on double-yellow lines outside, which sped off up Falmer Road towards Woodingdean.

Police sealed off part of High Street and toured local pubs to see if the two men had been drinking in one of them before the raid.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity, or who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the village yesterday evening, to get in touch.

Both men were white, in their mid-to-late 20s and between 5ft 9in and 5ft 11in.

The man with the knife wore a black cap, black jacket and black tracksuit bottoms with white stripes.

The other man wore a black zip-up fleece and black trousers.

Anyone with information should call Detective Constable Steve May on 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
