The origin of the name of Pease Pottage generally told is it was the place prisoners were given a meal at a break on their journey.
I have heard two versions: First, that they were on their way from the assizes at Lewes to jail at Horsham and, second, they were from London going for transportation.
The weakness of this is they should have been on the Portsmouth road.
In the Penguin Dictionary of British Place Names it is stated it got its name because it was a very muddy place, like pease pudding.
