A couple were rescued from a smoke-filled block of flats in Worthing after a blaze in their kitchen.
Two fire engines were called to the fire in Rowlands Road at 10.56pm yesterday.
Sub Officer Clive Innocent, of Worthing fire station, said the couple in their early 30s were in another room, oblivious to the danger, when the blaze broke out.
He said fire crews got no response after knocking to get the couple's attention and were forced to kick in the front door.
He added: "They were both very shocked."
