A 60-year-old man was stabbed in his leg and suffered minor cuts to his face and neck after he was dragged into town centre flats in Eastbourne.
A Pevensey Road resident found the victim lying in a hallway.
The man was admitted to Eastbourne District General Hospital and discharged a day later.
The attack happened around 6pm on Friday.
Police appealed for anyone who saw three white men of average build seen acting suspiciously in the area at the time to get in touch.
