Where are they? On Easter Sunday I spent a most enjoyable day in Brighton, having travelled on a day-trip coach from Marlow in Buckinghamshire.
I walked on the promenade between the Palace Pier and the West Pier and back say two miles.
I strolled to and round about the Lanes say another two miles. I investigated to the very end of the Palace Pier, port out, starboard back.
Not a glimpse anywhere of the familiar blue-and-white sign of a public convenience.
Not a "Ladies" or "Gents" on a promising-looking building.
Eventually, inspecting down on the beach, I asked a smart young man inviting custom to his beach cafe where the toilets were.
He had no idea but gallantly offered me the use of his own spotlessly clean row of ten, none of which, surprisingly, was occupied.
There must have been thousands of people on Brighton seafront that day.
How did they manage?
