Plans are being drawn up for a £150,000 revamp of Worthing's mosque.
The Masjed Assalam Islamic Cultural Centre, a registered charity, is on the Ivy Arch Road trading estate near Broadwater Bridge and has about 1,000 members from more than 20 countries.
Now there are proposals to improve and extend the centre. So far, £70,000 has been raised towards the project, which includes a dome and a decorative minaret.
Worthing Mayor Eric Mardell visited the centre and had a long talk with the elders of the mosque after Friday prayers.
Mosque chairman Ali Abdul Rahman said: "We need not only more space but facilities such as a library, while the washing facilities aren't really in a good condition and they need improving.
"We have an estimated cost of £150,000 and we have so far got £70,000 and want to put out an appeal to the Muslim people all over the area."
Deputy chairman Abdul Hadi said: "We have been working on the plan for the last couple of years. Now it has reached its final stages before we submit an application to the council very shortly."
