Fire destroyed three units in an historic maritime area last night triggering a huge battle to bring the blaze under control.
Up to 40 firefighters tackled the fire at its height in Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings.
The blaze is believed to have started in an empty lock-up just before 10.20pm before spreading to two neighbouring units, one a craft shop.
All three units made largely from timber were destroyed, opposite the popular Underwater World attraction in the Old Town.
Fire officials said today the blaze was under investigation, adding it was too early to determine a cause or whether it was deliberate.
Firefighters returned to the scene - at the heart of Hastings' famous fishing community - this morning to damp down and pick through the debris for clues.
The units are just 400 yards from the scene of another recent fire.
The Blue Dolphin Fish Bar, off the High Street, has been closed for a fortnight.
